I'm new to the forum and hope someone can help me.Monday I woke up and my right foot was just killing me for no reason. I went to work that night and by the time I got off (I work 12 hour nights) my right foot hurt so bad I could not stand to walk on it. Plus it was swelled up so bad I had a hard time just getting by boot off. I came home went to bed thinking it would be better that night. But it was not. It was all I could do to work the 12 hours that night and my foot was really swelled up then. So I went to the doctor and they did a blood test and said I had gout. They put me on indomethacin to help but could offer no more help on how to cope with it. I was off wednesday & thursday but have to work all weekend. Is there any thing I can do to help with the pain? 12 hours on my feet for 3 nights in a row I'm not sure I can take that. Hope someone can help.Any info would be great.
Thanks

I worked three days with the pain in my left big toe . I wore a boot one day had to grit my teeth and almost passed out putting my boot on. I took Ibuprofen 400 mg every 2 hrs. I find indocin does not help me. The next 2 days I wore a sandal on that foot with the backstrap only connected. I was driving a articulating truck at that time. I did take some colchicine after the second day a lot of the pain went away. The doctor advice not to work but I have bills to pay like most people.

Once gout has taken hold, you need to take anti inflammatory meds. Don't take meds that reduce your uric acid during an attack, it will only make things worse.
Once the attack settles down, take the preventative meds that will reduce the build up of uric acid.
For me, I relied on the meds initially to help with the management of gout. After a while I realised that taking drugs every day of my life to prevent gout didn't sit well with me.
I decided to persue a more "natural" approach.
I researched diet, exercise and some other natural remedies. I have been "gout free" for 5 years now with this approach.
Unfortunately there is no one magic cure for all. It will be a matter of trial and error for a while until you finds what works for you.
Good luck

That is one of my problem, a lot of information I have been told is contradicting. My doctor has prescribed allopurinol ( on the bottle and he verbally told me take when needed ) so if I feel a twinge in my toe I take it for a few days. I have had some severe attacks then he prescribed colchicine. On the bottle it says to take 1 a hour until pain symptoms approve or diarrhea occurs. He has prescribed indocin to take also I just don't get much releif with indocin, He tells me the allopurinol lowers uric acid very slowly and colchicine lowers it very fast so when I get a bad attack I need to lower the uric acid fast and so far the colchicine will make the pain go away with-in 48 hrs. I do take advil too for the pain.
About 2 weeks ago I got a bad attack in my left knee, I didn't no it was gout, I never had gout in my knee. Went to the doctors office and they sent me to the E.R. because I was in a lot of pain waited 2 days before I seeked help. 2 months ago I had a superficial blood clot in that knee area so I thought it was that problem again. The doctors ultra sound my knee and found that was not the problem. I told them I get gout sometimes and then the doctor gave me a pain shot in my hip and prescribed indocin. I told him I had gout pills at home but he told me their not for a acute gout attack. 2 days later I was still in pain then I started taking colchicine after 48 hours I can walk again. My Doctors office called me to see how I was doing. I told them what the ER told me and the doctor's office told me that I need to take the colchicine to lower my uric acid fast.
Then I read what food I can eat on one site it tells you one thing and another site says different. I apologize for the long story. It is so confusing to me. I am a heavy equipment operator and supervisor and sometimes truck driver. I try to listen to my medical personnel, the doctor told me maybe I need to start taking the allopurinol once a day. I just don't want to take another pill daily. I take 2 pills daily now!
