I have been taking Allopurinol regularly for about 3 - 4 years i havent had a flare up in at least 2 years. So i am wondering if i could stop taking it. I have heard some people get over gout and it doesnt come back. I would prefer not taking this chemical if i didnt have to.

My doctor warned me against stopping taking allopurinol. He was adamant from the start that I would be on allopurinol for the rest of my life. I was not ever happy about that. I wasn't sure that it was the best thing for me, but he told me scary stories about the potential for long-term damage from gout so I was sold on the idea that drugs was the only way! I'm not so convinced now. I stopped taking allopurinol with no adverse effects, but prior to that I made several lifestyle & diet changes first.

I'm no doctor - so please don't take my word for it - and ask your own doctor. But there is loads of information on the internet about proper diet for gout and looking after it naturally!
