I have had my first attack of gout, just a week ago. We are assuming that the cause is diuretics for hypertension, but I am also overweight by about 28 lbs and love red meat. But is there any length to the duration of an attack? The terrible, intense pain of the early attack has gone, but I am still swollen, limping. And I have to go to a wedding tomorrow, and can't get into shoes.

Men don't have that sort of problem!:)

And also, should I be walking? It is my only exercise, and I miss it. Today I walked about 1 1/2 miles on the beach, and boy, I feel it!

Duration of the attack depends on every individual and how fast the treatment is started.
With early treatment the attack may last for three to four days and untreated one up to two weeks, that’s the theory. But in my case the acute phase lasts at least two weeks with medicines (colchicine + voltaren) and full recovery up to two months.

Because diuretics make you lose water the uric acid level will increase and so the chances of having a gout attack.
