Yesterday I woke up with the pangs of herpes in my left eye. Having experienced countless attacks over the years, it's a "grab your attention" sign that forces me into action immediately. I haven't had a herpes attack in 6 or 7 years. But like those of us with gout, it gets your attention immediately.

25 years ago I was scratched accidentally in my left eye by a dog. an infection followed and ultimately ocular herpes set in.

I have battled this infection on and off since that time. It has impacted my vision and a corneal transplant is in my future.

Interestingly, I was diagnosed with the gout about two years ago. I was on a quick trip to CA and ended up in the ER with the most severe pain I've ever known (left ankle) Up until last night, the gout I've experienced has always been in my ankles and I haven't had a really serious attack since.

Since that time I've been lucky enough to sense the stiffening up of my ankle immediately. I then take allopurinol and more than the normal amount of black cherry and celery seed found in my daily regimen and quell the attack. For the most part, it's working, along with some common sense changes to my diet..

Yesterday, upon feeling the herpes attack, I immediately took the drug Acyclovir, a commonly prescribed anti viral med used to battle shingles(another form of herpes I'm told), venereal herpes, chicken pox and other maladies.

Almost immediately my big toe on my right foot began to hurt slightly.

The pain got worse throughout the day. For some reason I didn't make the connection because i had never experienced toe pain from the gout. And it was in the opposite leg.

However, I had an epiphany at 3am this morning when the rubbing of the sheets felt like my toe was being dragged on the pavement while going 60 miles per hour. {{{{{{GOUT!!!!!!!!!}}}}}}

Why it didn't dawn on me prior to then is anyone's guess.

So I got up and took my meds, cherry and celery and went back to bed. While not all gone yet, I'm feeling much better.

That said, I put 2 and 2 together and sure enough, Acyclovir was the catalyst for this attack.

I did some anecdotal research on the web. So take it with with a grain of salt but...

Be warned. If you take Acyclovir, just know that it jacks up your Uric acid and fast.
