Last week I went to a fish fry, before the food was cooked they had appetizers popcorn and peanuts, I ate peanuts then the food was done. On my plate was deep-fried blue-gill,catfish, deep fried wild mushrooms, boiled chicken gizzards,(boiled with mushrooms, onions, mushroom soup and stag beer), deep fried turkey and potatoes deep fried. Then I went back for seconds, but I didn't drink no beer just soda.

Two days later I was in Pain and oh what pain it was!!!!!!!!!!!!!!. I was almost bed-ridden.
My left knee was swollen bad .I just could not bend my knee without pain I could not lift my leg without pain excruciating PAIN !!!!!!!!!!!!!

I went to the E.R. The doctor gave me a pain shot and prescribed indocin I had colchlcine at home. Five days later here I am GOUT HAS WON now I am going to see what to do and what not to do. Hope I didn't bore you all too much but I am here to learn from you .:o

Welcome! I'm sorry to hear you've had a hard time with gout, but it is great to see that you have finally come to the realization that you have to do something about it.

The cause of your gout is an elevated uric acid level. That much is certain. What is not so certain is what has caused that level. Judging from your post though it seems that diet is going to have played a significant part in the development of your gout, and it will play a significant part in making it go away.

One of the things to remember this early on is that you will probably still struggle with this for some time. It takes a while for your body to reverse the problems that are causing your gout. I only say this because I know that many people seem to think that all they need to change their diet, and "hey presto gout begone". But it don't work quite like that.

Make sure you take the time to study the foods and other things that can cause gout. For example in your post you mention that you didn't drink beer, but you had a soda instead. Unfortunately sugary soda drinks are now also implicated in gout attacks for some people.

That last bit ("for some people") is one of the things about gout.. some people react to certain "trigger" foods differently to others. One person I was advising gets gout when they drink freshly ground coffee. I drink a lot of coffee and don't get gout. (Actually coffee is a funny one because apparently it increases the short term risk of gout but decreases the long-term risk!)

A good table of the high-purine foods can be found linked to from this post on my blog: http://curegoutpainnow.com/blog/general/which-foods-to-avoid-for-gout/

All the best. Ask lots of questions and learn as much as you can. Make sure you "add" to your diet as well as "subtract" from it. By this I mean there are foods such as cherries which are considered very good for gout, and should be added into the diet.

All the best

Oh yeah.. and I should add that gout may have "won" the battle... but there is no doubt you can win the war!

Thanks for this information. Funny you mention coffee the morning before my gout attack I drank-ed three cups of coffee. I haven't drank coffee in over a year, an the day I do drink coffee my gout appears. The fish fry was two days before my gout attack. Thanks again!

Welcome. I'm relatively new here as well.
Gout is a mysterious condition. We do not all suffer the same way and what works for me may not work for you.
Diet is probably the most important thing. You need to change the things you eat, particularly the foods high in purines.
Unfortunately it will be trial and error for some time but once you work out what aggrevates your gout it will be plain sailing from there.
For me shellfish, cured red meats and tomatoes are the things I avoid.
Stick with it until you find the food you need to avoid to be gout free.

Good luck
Lee
