Thanks to all for the suggestions and support for decreasing uric acid and dealing with attacks. How do you know your approach (diet, alcohol reduction, medication, etc) is working to reduce uric acid? I suppose an absence of attacks is the best evidence, but that seems a bit like waiting to see if you have a minor heart attack to see if your cholesterol medicine is working. Also, is there any other way besides a laboratory blood test to check uric acid? Thanks.

So far I've used "absence of attack" as my indicator, although I am due a blood test during my checkup shortly.

You might want to consider a home uric acid test kit. See here: http://www.goutpal.com/uric-acid/uric-acid-test-kit/
