Yesterday starting in the morning my big toe joint was starting to get stiff and uncomfortable. I started taking allopurinol when I felt this, Took 4 100mg tablets through the day. By bedtime my bigtoe joint was really stiff and sore, I took 2 more tablets of allopurinol. Woke up in the morning and everthing was back to normal, whew I really did not want to get in a full blown gout attack.:( ohithurtssomuch )

You REALLY lucked out. Allo does NOT prevent or stop acute attacks; in fact taking Allo when you're having an attack CAN and WILL make it MUCH worse. Allo is used strictly as a long term preventative, and that's the ONLY way it works. It often takes months to work. For acute attacks, I find that Prednisone, Indocin,or Colchicine (in that order) works best for me. Watch out & do not overdo these meds--they will screw up your kidneys. Ask me how I know!
