Hello everyone. It pains me to be here.......I mean, it's pain that brings me here. :D

Well first and foremost I love beer and meat, hence the name. I have been a heavy drinker for the last 20 years . I have ate like crap practically all those years. Now I am sick of being fat (6'1" 281lbs - 37 yo) and out of shape so I have slowed my drinking way down. The last 7 days I actually wrote down what I ate and was surprised at the calories I consumed. I actually thought I ate pretty well. That was until everything was added up. So the next few days I ate healthier and 1/2 the calories. I even exercised an hour a day. Then my gout flares up. Another thing I don't like to do is take medication, but when I have to take it I don't drink. I have been saving my liver for the beer.

My gout history started the winter of 2007. I started getting the ache in my left big toe. Finally the swelling and pain was bad I decided to see a doctor. He wanted me to get x-rays to make sure it wasn't broken. I thought might I have stubbed it hard enough to break it when I was drunk? No break and I received 50mg of Indocin. It worked ok. The pain went down enough were I could walk normal. The medicine that sealed the deal was about 8 - 10 Guinness' one night. The next day I had no pain at all.

6 months later I had another flare up in the left big. I thought I could wait out the pain, boy was I wrong. Around 11pm I went to a 24 clinic to get a refill on the Indocin, Advil did nothing. Same as the first attack, I took the Indocin till the pain had subsided a bit, then I had my Guinness. No pain. Woohoo

6 months after that my right big toe flared up. I had some Indocin left, but that didn't help. Went back to the doctor and told him my own cure was 8+ cans of Guinness. He looked at me like  . He prescribed 0.6 mg Colchicine. It was horrible. It tore my stomach up so bad. Gas, cramps, and diarrhea after the first dose. I stopped after 1 day of taking it. It did relieve some of the pain, but the side effects were so uncomfortable, the next day I proceeded to down an bunch of Guinness that night. Pain no more.

6 months later my right ankle was the lucky joint to receive a gout attack. That was worse then the ones I had in my toes. This time Guinness didn't work so I was forced to take the colchicine, that's all I had in the cabinet, and surprisingly the side effects were 80% less severe than the 1st time I took it. So that helped, then of course the day after I stopped taking the med, I tried more Guinness.

The last 2 flare ups have come over the last year and a half. Advil doesn't work at all. Guinness is the cure for me. Too bad I want to get back into a less round shape.

I have gotten little tingles here and there. I am guessing that's my body’s way of telling me to get to the bar or a liquor store. I drink a few and no problems. I usually get a flare up when I stop drinking totally for a week or 2. My diet has always been pretty poor, except this last week. And now I am exercising at least 1 hour a day, not today though.

I did have a physical last year and all the blood tests were normal. I didn't have a uric acid test. The doctor said he didn't think it necessary, because there are any people with low uric acid levels that get gout and many with high uric acid that don't.

Gout websites are very contradicting about what foods to eat and not to eat so I give up. The only thing they all agree on is not to eat organ meat (yuck). I haven't found any trigger foods or good natural pain cures that work for me. I will search these forums for more answers to my questions.

Thanks
Ken
