Is anybody aware if the typical light greenish yellow color of urine because of uric acid ?

If I drink 3L of water divided uniformly in 16 hrs in a gape of an hour. and the color of the urine is yellowish color then does it mean that kidney is working well. ( this is if i am gouty).

what is the color of urine which passes high uric acid.

a year ago my uric acid levels were over 9...3 weeks ago they went down to 6.5..as of Monday, April 18,2011 its down to 3.9 ! from what they tell me anything under 5 is normal that's just great..then why does my right knee feels like a hand grenade went off in it??.. I'm HOPING that its just taking extra time as I've been so eaten up with this that I should be better SOON..been on urloric for a couple weeks now..been watching my diet big time.. gout is just horrible........

I never saw a change in color due to uric acid. But in saying that, when I was getting gout I was absolutely thrashing my liver with alcohol, and often I had very dark urine. Brown almost.

That's bad! I suggest you never abuse your liver to that point.

But even after I stopped drinking and my liver had recovered a bit, I was still getting the occasional attack. I didn't notice any effect on my urine then.

I know this is an old thread but I found it by just doing a google search to see what others have experienced. I will just share my experience here for other such passersby who may come upon this thread.

It is my understanding that high uric acid levels in the blood greatly increase the risk of having gout attacks in the joints. Upon a gout attack it can be expected that the uric acid levels in the blood drop because this acid crystalizes and deposits in the joint. Again over time the uric acid level will build up until it reaches a high enough concentration again that it comes out of solution and deposits in the joints.

There seems to be no current "cure" for dissolving or removing the uric acid crystals from the joint once deposited other then allowing the body sufficient time to remove them through normal functions (and preventing them from crystalizing and depositing there in the first place by reducing uric acid in the blood). The best "treatments" are simply anti-inflammatories which reduce the bodies immune response to the presence of the crystals (which the immune system classifies as foreign) in the joint (thus reducing swelling and pain). The best thing to do is prevent gout attacks by reducing the uric acid level through diet, medication or other means. If the gout attacks occur frequently the body may not have enough time to remove the crystals from the joint and/or permanent joint damage may occur and/or "tophi" may form in the joint. It is important to treat gout just like another disease like diabetes (where the sugar levels are regulated) and properly regulate the uric acid levels in the blood.

I am just now recovering from my second gout attack in 3 years. I have been drinking lots of water (which is supposedly and seems to be helpful) and have noticed that the colour of my urine is yellow/green. I was searching to see if this colour is related to the uric acid levels in my system - that is how I discovered this thread.

Anyway hope the info I provided here may help someone some day. I'll continue my google search to see if I can find any other useful information.

It never ceases to amaze me how many hits can a thread with so little information and some misinformation get.
Urine color has nothing to do with dissolved uric acid, which is colorless (uric acid crystals are white, not yellow), the color in urine comes from heme metabolites, such as urobilin. Feces are brown because of the related substance stercobilin, which forms pigment gall stones.
However, the higher the iron stores, the greater the hematocrit (percentage of red blood cells in blood) and hemoglobin, which when discarded its heme becomes urobilin. Accordingly, the higher the iron stores, the more yellow the urine and since excess iron also increases uric acid production and precipitation in crystals, the yellow color of urine is indirectly related to urate levels and donating blood to eliminate the excess iron and molybdenum characteristic of gout will eventually reduce slightly hemoglobin and urobilin levels and the urate level considerably.
