First at all, let me tell you a bit about my GOUT journey. I am healthy 42 years dad of 2 who is active all the time; I practice martial art, working out (no supplement in any form use whatsoever) and love hiking a lot. One morning in early May 2011 I was waking up with excruciating pain in my left toe’s joint. I first thought it might be a result of injury for the 8 hours hike 2 days ago. I left it untreated and took couple of 400 mg Ibuprofen then went to work. The day went on and the pain was getting worst and the joint getting inflamed and swollen to the point I needed to take my shoe off. I went home and thought I must have broken something. I went to se my family doctor next day and was told I indeed suffer a gout attack. I was so shocked due to I am a “Red meat hater”, I do not smoke or drink any alcohol in my entire life, I exercise everyday and only have less than 10% body fat. How could I get gout? Then my doctor explained to me that because my dad and grandfather both had gout, genetically I have 70% chance to get gout in my lifetime. I am so discouraged and frustrated, I am already a “Health Freak” before all this, what am I suppose to do now, I hate to lose my mobility and made me feel weak and look like a cripple. Then I summarized what leading to the gout attack. First, I have to admit that I love Sardine and Herring, I ate 4 cans of oiled sardines and herring 3 days on a roll, also had spinach, asparagus, dried peas and beans for salad dinner the night before. Plus the 8 hours hike 2 days age with drinking very little water. Then followed by a13 hours long working day before the attack. Genetic or not, I had done everything humanly possible to contribute to my GOUT attack. I have no one to blame but myself. Then I started treating my gout with taking Ibuprofen, Colchcine , Apo-allopurinol and all of them gave me mild to server side effect and I hate become a medication reliant. Then I started to try home remedies like baking soda (which almost kill me and I ended up in ER because my BP went up to 200/123 in 2 days of drinking baking soda) potatoes extracted juice, Lemon juice, carrot and corn juice, eating lot of eggplant, drinking lot of skim milk and avoiding any seafood, meat, egg yolk, anything with yeast and flour, no beans, peas or nuts, no citrus food, no soft drink, no coffee or tea, etc. Guess what? After my initial attack seems to subside after 10 days, and after all these efforts, my joint flared up and the pain started again! I am extremely disappointed and more frustrated than ever, what am I going to do, only eat AIR and DUST? Finally, I came across a web site that suggested consuming dark skinned cherries, cherries juice, cherry fruit extract or tart cherry filling to tackle gout. At first, I am skeptical about it due to all the failed promise! WOW, let me tell you my fellow gout sufferers, I went out and bought 1 bottle of 500mg(90 capsules) Cherry fruit extract pill and started taking 2 capsules 3 times a day, and guess what? My swollen and pain was subsided after just 4 dosages, and with drinking a cup 8 oz. of water (maliciously) every hour. I am going to continue doing and would report the result to you, so far the Cherry remedy is the most effective relief and hope so far, and without worrying any long term side effect, cheers!

Hi Zenbimmer.

Interesting, as my husband took pure black cherry juice and didn't suffer any recurrent gout attacks either. However, the juice didn't lower his uric acid level which was surprising.

You're absolutely right about gout affecting men more than woman and being hereditary. My husband's father also suffers from gout.

I'm going out to buy some more cherry juice today.

I had a similar experience with my second gout attack last month. I'm in great shape, but i spent a week in Hawaii drinking lots of beer, eating lots of seafood and chocolate, snorkeling, boogie boarding, climbing, hiking, cliff jumping , and getting hypoxia at the top of Mauna Kea. This included drinking quite a bit of seawater and not drinking enough fresh water to fully rehydrate. It started to hit me on the flight home, and when I arrived home I began avoiding the problem factors. However, the attack did not improve for about 10 days. It wasn't until I religiously began drinking 3 liters of club soda per day, eating yogurt for breakfast and dinner, and eating a pound of cherries in between, that I saw improvement. Within 24 hours the inflammation began to subside. Presumably, the yogurt was increasing uric acid excretion and the club soda was contributing to dilution and excretion, and plausibly reducing monosodium urate precipitation . The cherries must be inhibiting monosodium urate crystal precipitation in some way.

You should try a natural gout product such as Inflamazol. It has a high potency of tart cherry in it. They have all of the ingredients listed on their website. It has helped me manage my gout, so I’d look into it, it may help you also.

Tart cherry extract could be extremely beneficial for gout sufferers as many know. There is much information supporting this, however my question is what about the main causes of the gout? Although cherry juice could be beneficial for inflammation and stiffness, what about the high levels of uric acid in the body causing all of this? The body seems to over produce the uric acid and is unable to eliminate it properly, hence causing the associated painful symptoms. I have been researching intently and there is a product called Inflamazol which seems to tackle more than just the symptoms. It also has quite an impressive list of ingredients. I have researched them and am pretty amazed with the results and benefits. This product also seems to contain the tart cherry which obviously is effective and beneficial for gout and joint inflammation as you have previously stated.

I bought a bottle of black cherry extract at GNC when I was having my bouts of gout (hehe) and it didn't do anything for me. It was hard to drink because (to me) it tasted awful. I took way more than the bottle said too. I was taking about a 1/4 - 1/2 cup and it didn't seem to help.

I still think Water is the best way to combat those tingles! I have been "flare-up free" for about 8 months and that's the longest since I started getting flare-ups in 2008. Anytime I feel a tingle... I start pounding water. I may do 3 or 4 (16oz) glasses.

And honestly, most of the time I feel those tingles are on days when I haven't had a lot (or any water).

If the cherries work for you... that's great. But I just wanted to share that they didn't work for me.

I'm 37 and have had gout for 6 years, attacks are every 5 months or so. Every attack, I try a different remedy, desperately trying to find the one that works for me.

I've tried cherries, cherry juice extract pills, black cherry concentrate, etc and none of them helped at all. I've also tried lemon juice, apple cider vinegar, baking soda, various fruits and veggies, and lots of water. Nothing seems to get the gout attacks shorter than 10 days.

I concur with 777twist. Cherries definitely don't work for everyone. I wish they did, believe me!

You've got to be sure that you don't have sleep apnea, which is when you repeatedly stop breathing for many seconds at a time during sleep. The reduction of oxygen in your body can often lead to a gout flare. Overcoming sleep apnea can cure your gout as it did for me and others. More importantly, it will greatly reduce your risk of developing many other life-threatening diseases that are known to be consequences of long term untreated sleep apnea.

Zenbimmer,
Eventually you´ll grow tired of or develop problems from years of cherry extract, which has helped you by alkalinizing blood, etc, and which simply doesn't work for people who are not as fit as you are (fat drinkers-smokers, etc,
