Hi.
Age: 28
Sex: Male
Weight: 170 lbs
Height: 5'8"

About 2 months ago I started feeling really fatigued and was having a lot of joint pains. Most of the pains are all throughout my feet and legs, and even in my elbows, shoulder, and recently a lot in my wrists and fingers. I got my blood tested and was diagnosed with gout and my uric acid level is over 10 mg/dL.

I love eating meat and I drink heavily on weekends. For the longest time I would mostly limit my drinking to just weekends. However, I currently live in Japan and after the recent big quake hit, I have been stressed out and started drinking fairly heavily on weeknights as well. Since being diagnosed, I went back to only drinking on weekends but it seems like I may have to stop for a while.

Ive been on zyloric 100 mg for a week but the doctor just increased it to 200 mg as of yesterday. Ive also been taking 2000 mg of vitamin C every day (in addition to 1000 mg of EPA, 1mg of Folice Acid, and some Selenium)

MY QUESTION: If I keep taking the 200 mg Zyloric every day and avoid high purine foods as much as I can and completely quit drinking for a while... about how long should it take for my uric acid levels to drop to somewhat normal levels? (say around 7 or so)

Drinking is kind of important for me because most of my social life kind of depends on it due to the working culture here and how my social life is. Its going to be VERY difficult for me to completely stop drinking, but I am willing to stop for a while to get the levels down. I stopped for 2 weeks but then drank again last weekend and had tons of pain the next day.

I havnt had any gout attacks that have caused so much pain that I cant move or anything, but I dont want it to get that bad.

Any advice would be really appreciated.... Also, what about smoking? I smoke on occasion. Will it seriously have negative effects on the gout?

The only thing I can tell you, is the best thing that works is black cherry. It can be bought in pill or liquid form. I have been taking it for 5+ years now and have had only 1 major inflammation. This is not a cure, my uric level is at about 4-5. I take the pill, its 1000mg, 1 in the morn and 1 in the evening. Remember to take regularly as a preventive measure, not for making an attack subside. Follow this and I think you'll be just fine.

p.s. I also drink heavily!

Forget, purine rich foods, forget meat, forget fish, forget alcohol, being the cause of your gout. The real culprit as I
found out after years of testing is FRUCTOSE.Try and reduce or eliminate that and your gout problems will be over.
You will be grateful to me for giving you this information.your doctors might disagree but what do you have to lose,
trying it for a couple of weeks. For me it worked wonders, after suffering from gout for more than 10 years.
