Alipurinol forever

Must I remain on this forever or is it okay to ease off of it and if so, how does I go about doing this? Will I get a major flare up?
Also, does anyone just take Cochmine (sp?) at first sign of flare up and not take Alipurinol or Probenaside on a daily basis?
