Hi there, I'm 35 , male, i've been told after tests that my acid levels are 5.1 and on another occaision 5.7. What is the level that would be associated with gout? I have had an xray that shows some osteoarthritis, and this particular episode is different from last time.

Quick history:

had definite gout 5 years ago - wow painful!
slight recurrence 12 months later, no where near as bad
twisted ankle triggered similar symptoms 2 years ago - never was sure if this brought on gout, urate levels were at 5.1
recent slow onset of swelling and pain in foot, has subsided over first two weeks, but now still less swollen but bunion and osteoarthritis confirmed from xray. urate 5.7

My doctor has been really unhelpful and persistently rejected the idea of a bunion until the xrays came back. Big toe has hallux valgus - am i still in the gout ballpark or should i be thinking its a trauma related/other arthritis?

Any help greatly appreciated as this is 5 weeks on crutches now!

I had been a victim of painful gout. Sodium bi-carb helped me a lot. now i take sodium bi carb at nite twice a week. or sometimes once a day. I do not have any gout pain now. follow this. this is an extract from the web page I cured my gout.

"drink 1/2 (flat) teaspoon (2.5 grams) of baking soda in a glass of water once before going to bed, once after getting up in the morning, and every 2-4 hours in between when the stomach is not very full -- up to a total of 7 times a day maximum for no more than 2 weeks. It can make Indomethacin and other NSAIDs more effective and may even eradicate gout. It may temporary raise the blood pressure. Cut salt intake. Monitor the blood pressure if one is hypertensive. Stop taking baking soda if the blood pressure becomes too high."

After the above treatment. Continue soda-bi carb once at night after u r relived . for next 2 weeks, later lessen it to one 2mg each night. after this lessen it to two times a week, for a month. Then once a week. after you are start this ( one dose a week) you can slowly start with all food stuff. and enjoy life. I dont restrict my food now. and enjoying my life . :) Thanks to sodium bi carb.

if one is indeed having a gout attack the uric acid level can actually drop during the flair so that number can be deceiving.the safe zone level is somewhat controversial and the docs will tell you different but the people i know that are gout educated say 6.0 or under.you say you had definite gout 5 years ago,did they aspirate the joint with a needle to look for urate crystals?other conditions can mimic gout such as pseudogout, septic arthritis etc.if you have not seen a rheumotoligist to date,i would urge you to do so.alot of these docs dont have a clue.good luck.
